The Original Plan

In the last two months, I’ve gone to REI at least once a week (in addition to shopping on their website everyday), probably made a million tweaks to my itinerary (detailed in Excel, of course), referenced my Lonely Planet South America on a shoestring guide at least daily, and I’m sure I’ve read hundreds of TripAdvisor/Booking.com reviews. Talk about obsessed! Ok, let’s call it overly excited.

I admit it, I have been talking, prepping, and dreaming about this backpacking trip for years! The idea originally came up after I studied abroad in Hong Kong for 6 months and traveled throughout Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, as a new college graduate in the economic downturn of 2008, traveling the world didn’t seem very practical. Also, considering I had a job lined up after graduation in NYC (coming from California), I felt pretty lucky and didn’t want to miss the opportunity. I figured I would just live in NYC for two years, save enough money for my trip, quit my job, go travel for a year, and move back to California. Easy right?
